The Grandeur of Cantering Horses and Cheerful chatter at L’ Ormarins Queen’s Plate 2017

Cape Town

Cape Town has a thousand spectacles and a thousand and one tales and I am glad I was there in this New Year to help give this rollicking old seaport its strong atmosphere. Its old streets and narrow alleys have watched the story of the town roll by with the centuries. It is safe to say that Johannesburg has the money but only Cape Town possesses the treasure that is not to be found in the mines. Cape Town, with its streets and unpredictable alleys, is rich with the spoils of time and the past lives again in walled and hidden gardens. Gale after south-east gale may rattle our shutters and sting our faces but the most furious wind cannot blow away the wealth of Cape Town’s story. Thus, this city made a first and lasting impression on me when I first visited it many years ago and left a fragrant memory.

So, once again, I flew down to Cape Town from Johannesburg on invitation of Anthonij Rupert Wines and Celebrity Services Africa (CSA) for the annual L’ Ormarins Queen’s Plate – an important day for many, celebrated by many horse lovers across the country. This is a pageant of striking horses, colourful jockeys, glamorous fashion, and the anticipation and excitement of fame and fortune. Mobs of people flock to the stands, open grounds and exclusive lounges at Kenilworth Racecourse to announce their presence. Beautiful women don festive hats, men gather in their suits and tailored silk neckties and cravats in camaraderie and sport, celebrities are interviewed for pre-race programming and people across the nation tune into the social media timelines to witness the majesty of horses the thrill of the occasion.

I found myself in the great company of cheerful chatter, clinking champagne glasses and the roaring grandeur of cantering horses. Guests are encouraged to come out looking up-to-the-minute in blue and white – colours everlastingly appointed by the deity to be a source of delight. Historically, horseracing has attracted High Society – the wealthy – as well those aspirant of such a lifestyle, all can be seen parading their latest fashion outfits in the summer carnival atmosphere of the races.

Stylish hats and fascinators bring the charm and are an essential part of the racing fashion. Traditionally, these were extravagant pieces, decorated with features, beads and jewels. Nowadays, they tend to be more minimalistic and practical. In this exciting season leading up to the L’ Ormarins Queens Plate, milliners, like Simon and Mary, are besieged with requests and outstanding orders.

Of course, one cannot miss the extensive range of private suites and lounges, all of which offer superb views of the racetrack or parade ring, with dining options to suit every mood and occasion. This is undoubtedly fabulous and picturesque racing at its best. In what was truly an unforgettable weekend of the highest quality, exquisite hospitality and a truly incredible experience for all attendees, I am already looking forward to next year’s L’ Ormarins Queen’s Plate. A special thanks goes out to the generous hosts.
